GLOSSARY OF TERMS
ASTM: American Society of Testing and Materials
Base Layer: Layer of insulation found below the finished roof, typically used to achieve a specified R-Value. In the tapered design industry this layer is separate from the tapered system.
Cricket: An assembly of materials that diverts water away from units, skylights, walls or other vertical roof projections and penetrations; also called a saddle.
Deck: The substrate over supportive framing to which roofing material is applied; also called decking or sheathing.
Dry Rot: Wood decay caused by certain species of fungi that digest parts of the wood which give the wood strength and stiffness.
Field Slope: Slope in the plane of the main portion of the roof.
Finish Slope: The final slope on a completed roof.
Fill Boards: Insulation used in a tapered system to build up and aid in achieving a continuous slope.
Flat or low slope roof: A roof with a pitch of less than three feet of rise over a twelve-foot run; this type of roof needs a sealed system installation.
Hip: The external angle formed by the intersection of two sloping roof planes; from the ridge to the eaves.
Ridge: The uppermost, horizontal external angle formed by the intersection of two opposing sloping roof planes.
R-Value: A measurement indicating the resistance of a given thickness of material (insulating material) to the flow of heat: the higher the R-value, the greater the insulation properties.
Step Start: Insulation stacked and off-set during install to achieve a minimal edge. Often used in multiple layer crickets.
Valley: The internal angle formed by the intersection of two sloping roof planes to provide water runoff.
